Bugle Yearbook at Virginia Tech Earns Prestigious Honor

2013CoverCropSmallerThe Bugle Yearbook at Virginia Tech earned a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at an awards ceremony March 14, 2014. The yearbook is one of seven winners in the nation.

The prestigious award is the third consecutive Crown Award for the Bugle, which won Gold in 2012 and Silver in 2011.

This year 1,236 digital, newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2012-2013 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2014 Crown Awards Program. All entries were judged at Columbia University from Dec. 14-16, 2013, by the Board of Crown Judges. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics. Only seven yearbooks nationally earned gold or silver Crown awards.

The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned by Columbia University since 1925 and operated as a program affiliated with its Graduate School of Journalism, the association offers three major services: annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards; planning two conventions and a week-long summer workshop; plus small press publishing activities.

The Bugle is in good company on this year’s Crown list. Other Silver Crowns went to Cactus at the University of Texas and Razorback at the University of Arkansas. Yearbooks at the University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, Western Kentucky University and Loyola Marymount University earned Gold Crowns.

The Bugle, which has been serving the Virginia Tech community since 1895, is a student-run division of the Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech. The yearbook has a history of excellence including multiple honors in recent years:
