2010-2011 Bugle Editor-in-Chief
Lead the yearbook and its staff in a mission to chronicle an entire year of Virginia Tech history. Applicants for this position must submit an EMCVT leadership application. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Provide excellent customer service, accurate data entry, and other routine office duties. Must be reliable, have good attention to detail, and want to contribute to one of the university's oldest traditions - the Bugle yearbook, which has been published since 1895. Summer 2010 Photo Assistants
Work Mondays-Thursdays during Virginia Tech’s orientation in the mornings until about 11:30 a.m. helping new freshmen get their yearbook photos taken. Must be outgoing, friendly, and punctual for a morning shift. Fridays off! This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Summer 2010 Shipping Staff
Make some extra textbook or spending money during the August down-time. Exact days will depend on freight arrival, but are expected to be 2-3 days between August 13-23. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

College Media Solutions Advertising

Marketing Coordinator
The marketing coordinator is responsible for planning the sales promotion and marketing plans. Plans include developing a media kit, sales promotion initiatives, special sections and conducting marketing and customer service surveys. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Summer Account Executive
Help local businesses and university organizations get their message out to the VT community through student media outlets as a consultative marketing specialist. Assess marketing possibilities, create marketing plans and, working with graphic designers, create high quality advertising campaigns for print, online, broadcast, and out of home media. Deliver proposals to clients in polished and professional presentations. Provide outstanding customer service and meet deadlines for paperwork and art. Must be outgoing, personable, have good follow-through and be able to communicate excellent ideas to clients. Previous advertising or sales experience a plus, but if you have the right attitude and work ethic, we will train you on all needed skills. Able to set a regular schedule that works around classes. Commission based pay that rewards hard work with high pay. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Summer Assistant Account Executive
Be a member of the inside sales and operational team for student media. Call business and university clients with publication information, help them complete paperwork and submit art. Other duties include accurate data entry; filing; faxing; taking and returning phone messages; making copies; delivering, sorting, and opening mail; and sending tearsheets and bills. Must be reliable, energetic, and a great team member. We will train on all other skills needed. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Summer Creative Services Staff
The creative services staff is responsible for creating well-designed advertisements for customers who request their ad to be created. They are also responsible for creating house advertisements if necessary. Applicants with availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- especially in the afternoons -- are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Web Designer
Works closely with the design and production adviser and student programmers to design and implement revenue generating websites and/or new database-driven sites. Photoshop and either HTML or a client-side web editor like Dreamweaver required. Knowledge of Flash beneficial. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Web Developer
Works closely with the design and production adviser and student designers to implement necessary modifications and improvements to the College Media's revenue generating websites and/or new database-driven sites. Proficiency in PHP, SQL, and XHTML programming required. Unix, Access, or FileMaker a plus. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

The features editor is responsible for covering human interest, news features, reaction pieces, personality profiles and entertainment stories for the CT. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

2010-2011 Multimedia Editor
If you’ve got multimedia skills, journalistic vision and the ability to manage a staff of around half-a-dozen reporters and editors, this is a prime opportunity. The multimedia editor will help direct the work of the multimedia reporters in each of the main sections of the paper (news, sports, features) in conjunction with the respective section editors. The multimedia editor will work with the managing editors, editor-in-chief and section editors to coordinate long-term multimedia coverage for in-depth pieces. In coordination with the multimedia associate editor, the multimedia editor will be responsible for helping multimedia reporters edit their video and audio content for production. Sample experiences could include hands-on tasks like shooting a political speech on campus to administrative duties like developing long-term multimedia goals to interpersonal tasks such as coaching multimedia reporters in a variety of activities. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

2010-2011 News Editor
The news editor will: keep up with news concerning Virginia Tech and the surrounding community; be responsible for the quality and accuracy of news stories; assign stories and ensure that writers meet deadline requirements; maintain regular daytime office hours; recruit and train a competent news staff; train a staff of news writers and coach them, paying specific attention to each writer; make photo assignments for the Student Publications Photo Staff; solicit graphics, from the graphics editor; attend editorial board meetings; maintain strong knowledge of Collegiate Times style, Associated Press style, Freedom of Information Act and state/ federal libel laws. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

2010-2011 Opinions Editor
The opinions editor is responsible for the opinions pages, which include letters to the editor, commentaries, editorial cartoons and the staff editorial. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

2010-2011 Sports Editor
The sports editor is responsible for the comprehensive coverage of Virginia Tech athletics and other athletic events of interest to readers. The sports editor will consult the business manager concerning financial issues related to sports coverage. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Multimedia Reporter
As a multimedia reporter, you’ll be the point person for bringing news, sports and features stories to life. Whether striking out on your own projects or “tagging along” with a news reporter to add video or audio depth to a story, you will have a variety of tasks including writing, shooting/recording, editing and administrative tasks. You will be required to produce two “stories” per week, one of which will be a multimedia production attached to a textual news piece of your own production and the other will be either a textual news story for your section or a multimedia addition to a textual story produced by another reporter. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

Reporter / Staff Writer
The Collegiate Times' handles reporting assignments in the following manner. Each section - features, news, and sports - has a set number of reporter positions. These paid positions are eligible for work study and require reporters to follow a "beat," a certain topical area of investigation such as Blacksburg and local politics, music, or Virginia Tech football, and produce at least one story per week from this beat. They are required to write an additional story per week, which may or may not be from their beat assignment.

Staff writers have similar responsibilities to reporters. Staff writers cover beats and are required to produce at least one story per week on the topic of their beat. They are free to take additional assignments beyond that point, however. Staff writers are unpaid positions. Work done as a staff writer is a significant factor in hiring decisions for reporting positions.

Summer 2010 Features Editor
The summer features editor is responsible for covering human interest, news features, reaction pieces, personality profiles and entertainment stories for the CT. Silhouette literary and arts magazine

2010-2011 Alumni Relations Director
The alumni relations director will: maintain alumni relations through requests for donations/subscriptions; be ultimately responsible for writing and mailing patron/subscription letters once a year by the end of the first half of the fall semester; be required to hold office hours for at least two hours a week. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Assistant Art Editor
The assistant art editor, alongside the art editor: arranges the submitted artwork; informs the editor about any selected artwork that could jeopardize the integrity of the magazine; communicates with the artists of all submitted artwork: announcing final art selections, gathering required information, and arranging the return of artwork to the submitter in a timely manner; prepares the selected artwork for magazine production; arranges class visits to all Virginia Tech art classes to announce and promote the submissions deadline; looks for art and design contest opportunities for the magazine and notifies them to the public relations director. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Assistant Fiction Editor
The assistant fiction editor, alongside the fiction editor: arranges the submitted fiction, informs the editor about any selected fiction that could jeopardize the integrity of the magazine; communicates with the authors of all submitted work: announcing final fiction selections, and gathering required information; prepares the selected fiction for production; arranges the trade of art and literary magazines with other colleges; arranges class visits to all Virginia Tech fiction classes to announce and promote the submission deadline; organizes and conducts writing workshops with poetry editor; along with the editor-in-chief, is responsible for the organization of any fiction prize/contest the magazine might conduct; looks for opportunities where the magazine could present itself for competition and notifies the public relations director. This is a volunteer position.

The assistant poetry editor, alongside the poetry editor: arranges the submitted poetry; informs the editor about any selected poetry that could jeopardize the integrity of the magazine, communicates with the authors of all submitted work; prepares work for publication; arranges class visits to all Virginia Tech poetry classes to announce and promote the submission deadline; conducts and coordinates writing workshops along with the fiction editor; along with the editor-in-chief, is responsible for the organization of any poetry prize/contest the magazine might conduct. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Communications Director
The communications director: represents Silhouette at weekly SGA meetings and announces Silhouette events and submission deadlines to the student leaders at the meeting; acts as a liaison between Silhouette and any other local arts-oriented organizations; directs recruitment activities for Silhouette throughout the year (general information meetings); is responsible for maintaining a collection of advertisements, flyers, and other artifacts of Silhouette history. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Distribution Manager
Distribution Manager is: responsible for the distribution of the magazine to all designated distribution locations, on and off campus; responsible for the maintenance of Silhouette computers and related equipment; responsible for making and distributing signs on racks around campus; responsible for distributing racks around campus; responsible for notifying the editor-in-chief and business manager if new racks need to be ordered; is required to hold office hours for at least two hours a week. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Graphic Designer
Graphic designers are: responsible for ensuring the design integrity of the magazine during production; responsible for making all fliers or allocating that duty to another staff member; responsible for reviewing and approving fliers before posting; required to hold office hours for at least two hours a week; responsible for making advertisements for special events. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Production Manager
The production manager: is responsible for all technical aspects of the magazine layout and production; compiles all selected work into the InDesign document; conducts staff workshops explaining how to use InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and other skills necessary to work on magazine design and layout; ensures the magazine is correctly prepared for the printer, including checking for typographical and layout error; is required to hold two hours of office hours a week. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Promotions Director
The promotions director: promotes Silhouette events and submissions deadlines; reserves and designs display cases in Squires for upcoming Silhouette events; designs flyers/posters for the Silhouette A-frame to be displayed outside Squires or McBryde for upcoming Silhouette events; organizes the ordering and distribution of any Silhouette promotional items; promotes Silhouette’s image around campus in new and creative ways. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Public Relations Director
The public relations director: maintains the organization’s visibility on the campus and in the local community; is responsible for all advertisements; works closely with the special events coordinator to ensure that all events are adequately advertised; is responsible for entering the magazine for all competitions approved by both the editor-in-chief and the business manager; may create a team of staff members to concentrate on local publicity, campus publicity, and national publicity; is responsible for working with the public relations staff from all entities of EMCVT in order to create a strong visibility for the company as a whole. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Special Event Coordinator
The special events coordinator: coordinates all Silhouette related benefits and events, and works closely with the public relations director to ensure a desired level of advertisement for all special events. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Webmaster
The webmaster is a volunteer position completely responsible for maintaining Silhouette’s web page on a weekly basis, which includes updating an events page, updating the online magazine semesterly, and maintaining an online list of staff heads and contact information. This is a volunteer position.

General Staff
The general staff: aides magazine production by helping design layouts, critiquing magazine submissions, editing selected submissions for print, promoting the magazine via class visits and posting flyers, and assisting the editors with magazine-related tasks. This is a volunteer position.

Student Publications Photography Staff

Photographer
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing quality visual images for Collegiate Times and Bugle publication; attending twice-weekly photo meetings as determined by the director of photography; shoot features, events or portraits as assigned by photo editors; shoot feature photos on independent assignments; provide captions for photo assignments. This is a volunteer position.

VTTV student television

2010-2011 Entertainment Director
The entertainment director will: oversee the entire entertainment department; maintain and track music videos and movie trailers used in productions; maintain VTTV music producers, VTTV movie producers, and their productions; work with record companies to secure music video clips; and seek out new ideas for entertainment shows. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Office Manager
The office manager will: coordinate activities with the business manager; maintain the office; maintain minutes for management meetings; maintain mailings and subscriptions; maintain phone chain and membership list in an organized fashion; be responsible for use of staff development funds for Management Staff and Staff Meetings; keep a VTTV scrapbook; maintain historical member list; maintain VTTV bulletin board and displays. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Promotions Director
The promotions director will: conduct market research and surveys; recruit promotion and corporate sponsorships; be esponsible for a successful promotional campaign for the station; be responsible for securing designs and ordering apparel for the staff.; produce and distribute program guides, flyers, and advertisements; coordinate all promotional events with the management staff. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Special Productions Director
The special productions director will: maintain contract sales and other special productions; work with the business manager for sales and billing of contracts; coordinate with the station manager to avoid equipment conflicts; seek out and develop new production and ideas.

2010-2011 Sports Director
The sports director will: oversee the entire sports department; recruit and manage producers for sports productions; schedue sports productions and events; acquire contracts for recording and broadcasting of sporting events; seek out new sports shows; act as a liaison to the Athletic Department. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Station Manager
The station manager will: be responsible for the internal operations of the station; act as the head production manager, making sure the programming department runs smoothly; act as a link between the management staff, keeping communication flowing; keep the general manager updated of any potential problems that could affect the efficient operation of the station; coordinate with management staff to avoid equipment conflicts; and coordinate staff training. This is a volunteer position.

WUVT 90.7 FM independent radio

2010-2011 AM Program Director
The AM program director is responsible for the overall operations of the AM studio. The AM program director is primarily concerned with the recruiting and training of new members. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Art Director
The art director is responsible for overseeing and participating in the production of all visual and graphic art at WUVT. This person will appoint a staff to produce artwork for concert fliers, the Woove, Web site graphics, and other promotional content. A strong background in graphic or visual art is recommended. Samples of work should be ready upon request. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 FM Program Director
The FM program director is responsible for the overall operations of FM. The FM program director is primarily concerned with training and scheduling FM disc jockeys and ensuring broadcasts are in compliance with FCC regulations. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Music Director
The music director oversees the entire operations of the music office and the music staff. He or she should appoint and work closely with the sub-genre directors and stay informed about disc jockey questions and thoughts about music programming. This is a paid position and eligible for work study.

2010-2011 News Director
The news director is responsible for all facets of the news staff, including content, operation, technicalities, etc. The News Director has final word on all news broadcasts and all decisions that affect the news staff, although the general manager and the FM program director reserve the right to maintain or change a decision made on any newscast based on quality, ethical or legal issues. The news director is responsible for: 1) Recruiting, training, managing and dismissal of the news staff; 2) Coordinating the directors of sports, public affairs, features, and opinions/commentary and overseeing the broadcast of any news-related programming, and 3) Working with the FM program director to schedule news programming. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Office Operation Manager
The office operation manager is a support position for the business office. He or she should work closely with the staff, the general manager. The office operation manager maintains the business office in a professional manner and oversees all operations within the office. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Production Director
The production director is a support position for special productions and pre-recorded material. The production director should have a working knowledge of the production studio. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Promotions Director
The promotions director is responsible for promoting WUVT in order to maintain the station’s visibility within the community and on campus. The promotions director should have a working knowledge of the radio station and its current staff. It is recommended the promotions director work closely with the public relations director. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Public Relations Director
The public relations director is responsible for developing good working relationships both internally, within the staff, organizational members and alumni, and externally, with the community, university, and listening audience. The PR director is also responsible for organizing events that further a good image of the station. It is recommended the public relations director work closely with the promotions director. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Special Events Coordinator
The special events coordinator plans all concert-related promotions of WUVT. The special events coordinator is responsible for booking all WUVT sponsored events. The special events coordinator is responsible for working with the promotions director and production director for promoting the concert events. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Sports Director
The sports director is responsible for the overseeing of a staff and the organization of a weekly hourlong discussion show. This is a volunteer position.

2010-2011 Traffic Director
The traffic director is responsible mainly for the implementation and update of WUVT’s automation system, and all scheduling for said system. This is a volunteer position

2010-2011 Woove Editor-in-Chief
The WOOVE editor-in-chief is responsible for all facets of WUVT’s music magazine. The chief editor shall oversee the entire operation of the WOOVE, including appointing and managing any and all staff members for the WOOVE. This is a volunteer position.
