Creative insight and input into how to best capture the year in written form is necessary along with the ability to give strong direction to the writers. The position requires a keen eye with a comprehensive knowledge of AP Style as a main part of the position will be to oversee all editing and proofing of all yearbook copy. Necessary skills: ability to work as an integrated part of a team; leadership experience; ability to manage a multitude of writing assignments; creative direction for copy content; ability to communicate clearly; self motivation. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <I>2010-2011 Staff Writer</I> <BR>The role of staff writer is to assist in the copy writing and production of the book in the form of written stories and captions. Creative insight and input into how to best capture the year in written form is necessary as well as the ability to verbally communicate in a group setting Necessary skills: ability to work as an integrated part of a team; writing experience; ability to write copy at a level of quality able to be run in a legitimate publication; ability to discern details; initiative and drive; a brief portfolio of writings that characterize your talent and potential. This is a volunteer position. <P> <b>College Media Solutions Advertising</b> <P> <I>2010-2011 Account Executive</I> <BR>Account executives are responsible for soliciting advertisements that appear in the Bugle, Collegiate Times, Silhouette and VTTV as well as underwriting for WUVT. Responsibilities include preparing advertising plans, creating and maintaining relationships with clients, prospecting new clients, and ensuring that their clients' advertisements run correctly. This is a great opportunity for students to gain sales experience and differentiate themselves from their peers. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <I>2010-2011 Creative Services Staff</I> <BR>The creative services staff is responsible for creating well-designed advertisements for customers who request their ad to be created. They are also responsible for creating house advertisements if necessary. Applicants with availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- especially in the afternoons -- are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <I>Extra Point Promotions Team</I> <BR>Members of this team work before all six home football games promoting the Collegiate Times  special section The Extra Point. Promotion teams distribute newspapers to Hokie fans entering Lane Stadium. This is a paid position. <P> <I>Web Designer</I> <BR>Works closely with the design and production adviser and student programmers to design and implement revenue generating websites and/or new database-driven sites. Photoshop and either HTML or a client-side web editor like Dreamweaver required. Knowledge of Flash beneficial. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <I>Web Developer</I> <BR>Works closely with the design and production adviser and student designers to implement necessary modifications and improvements to the College Media's revenue generating websites and/or new database-driven sites. Proficiency in PHP, SQL, and XHTML programming required. Unix, Access, or FileMaker a plus. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <b>Collegiate Times newspaper</b> <P> <I>Distribution Assistant</I> <BR>The distribution assistant will perform biweekly inventory of all racks to ensure they maintain an aesthetically pleasing appearance, initiate repairs as needed in conjunction with the business manager, remove all unauthorized posters or flyers attached to Collegiate Times racks, place approved poster advertisements in requisite racks promptly after arrival, package and mail subscriptions every Friday,assist with microdistribution  dropping papers in local businesses every publication day, and aid the business manager with other miscellaneous tasks as they arise. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <I>Opinion Columnist</I> <BR>Columnists are responsible for submitting accurate, complete and insightful articles for the Collegiate Times. This is a volunteer position. <P> <I>Reporter / Staff Writer</I> <BR>The Collegiate Times' handles reporting assignments in the following manner. Each section - features, news, and sports - has a set number of reporter positions. These paid positions are eligible for work study and require reporters to follow a "beat," a certain topical area of investigation such as Blacksburg and local politics, music, or Virginia Tech football, and produce at least one story per week from this beat. They are required to write an additional story per week, which may or may not be from their beat assignment.<P> Staff writers have similar responsibilities to reporters. Staff writers cover beats and are required to produce at least one story per week on the topic of their beat. They are free to take additional assignments beyond that point, however. Staff writers are unpaid positions. Work done as a staff writer is a significant factor in hiring decisions for reporting positions. <P> <I>Web Developer</I> <BR>Works closely with the online director in order to implement necessary modifications and improvements to the collegiatetimes.com content management system and.or separate site features. Proficiency in PHP, SQL, XHTML programming and Unix required. This is a paid position and eligible for work study. <P> <b>Silhouette literary and arts magazine</b> <P> <I>General Staff</I> <BR>The general staff: aides magazine production by helping design layouts, critiquing magazine submissions, editing selected submissions for print, promoting the magazine via class visits and posting flyers, and assisting the editors with magazine-related tasks. This is a volunteer position. <P> <b>Student Publications Photography Staff</b> <P> <I>Photographer</I> <BR>Responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing quality visual images for Collegiate Times and Bugle publication; attending twice-weekly photo meetings as determined by the director of photography; shoot features, events or portraits as assigned by photo editors; shoot feature photos on independent assignments; provide captions for photo assignments. This is a volunteer position. <P> <b>VTTV student television</b> <P> <I>2010-2011 Chief Engineer</I> <BR>The Chief Engineer will: be responsible for overall operation of station equipment; Report status of equipment to the general manager, business manager and station manager Regularly; be responsible for maintenance and care of equipment; oversee all technical aspects, including: cable access, signal quality, equipment connectors, computers, and telecommunications etc.; responsible for managing tape-switching and master control. This is a volunteer position. <P> <I>2010-2011 Station Manager</I> <BR>The station manager will: be responsible for the internal operations of the station; act as the head production manager, making sure the programming department runs smoothly; act as a link between the management staff, keeping communication flowing; keep the general manager updated of any potential problems that could affect the efficient operation of the station; coordinate with management staff to avoid equipment conflicts; and coordinate staff training. This is a volunteer position. <P> <I>2010-2011 Webmaster</I> <BR>The webmaster will manage and oversee the overall operation of the website, its associated content, and its integration with the VTTV programming. (Proficency in PHP, XHTML, Fireworks, Adobe Flash, video editing applications, and leadership is a must.) This is a volunteer position. <P> <b>WUVT 90.7 FM independent radio</b> <P> <I>2010-2011 News Director</I> <BR>The news director is responsible for all facets of the news staff, including content, operation, technicalities, etc. The News Director has final word on all news broadcasts and all decisions that affect the news staff, although the general manager and the FM program director reserve the right to maintain or change a decision made on any newscast based on quality, ethical or legal issues. The news director is responsible for: 1) Recruiting, training, managing and dismissal of the news staff; 2) Coordinating the directors of sports, public affairs, features, and opinions/commentary and overseeing the broadcast of any news-related programming, and 3) Working with the FM program director to schedule news programming. This is a volunteer position. <P> <I>General Staff</I> <BR>WUVT is always looking for dedicated individuals to pitch in with station operations.
